During the last 21 months the Better Breathing consortium has validated various services for COPD patients - from home-hospitalisation and home-rehabilitation to virtual communities - and the results are highly positive. It was clearly visible from the presentations at the conference that the objective of providing a new service model for care of COPD patients which improves the quality of life was achievable. COPD patients from early disease stage to severely ill can all benefit from the Better Breathing services. The health professional users were equally content with the solutions and found them to add value to their work and even improve the quality in the provision of care.

The Better Breathing services are just one small part of the world of telemedicine and telecare, but it is important for the future success of the Better Breathing services to understand the full environment of telemedicine and telecare as it is much more than the mere clinical care content. Therefore, other speakers were invited who could give their expert view on issues like interoperability; management; assessment models for telemedicine evaluation; and what the upcoming trends are and what future in telemedicine and telecare will look like.
